What exactly is DAYBREAK and is it the same thing as New Bloom? How are New Bloom and DAYBREAK related?
DAYBREAK is New Bloom’s physical events space in Wanhua, Taipei, just a 5-8 minute walk from MRT Station Longshan Temple Exit 3. In addition to DAYBREAK, New Bloom hosts multiple online publications such as New Bloom Magazine (our main publication), No Man Is An Island (our arts and culture publication), and The Daybreak Project (an interactive encyclopedia and oral history archive of the 2014 Sunflower Movement). Since its founding in 2014, New Bloom has been wanting to run a physical events space to build in-person community rather than being only virtual. In January of 2022, DAYBREAK 破曉咖啡 was created as a result. We are a fully volunteer-run space and team.

What are DAYBREAK’s hours? When are you open? When do you close?
Most of the time, DAYBREAK is open only for events. Since we are fully volunteer-run, we have limited capacity and are unable to staff regular business hours. However, as of February 2024, we have started doing regular open hours on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 4:30pm-9:00pm. Beside these hours, DAYBREAK is only open for events. Most events start at 7pm and people are welcome to begin arriving at 6:15pm.
When we close is dependent on volunteer capacity that day. We announce last call the night of.
Who runs DAYBREAK? Are there full-time employees? Who’s the manager?
No full-time employees and no manager! We are a horizontal organization of volunteer team members who contribute according to our capacity. We are also lucky to have multiple DAYBREAK community members who graciously volunteer their time and skills to help organize and run events.
DAYBREAK Cafe is called 破曉咖啡 in Chinese… Do you sell coffee?
No. While we started off providing coffee service, we currently do not serve coffee. Some days we might have coffee as a special. For those seeking caffeine, we have a variety of tea options available.
When I buy a drink or make a donation, where does my money go? How are the funds used?
It goes to paying the rent! Our base rent is NTD$40,000 a month, and our utilities and other expenses typically average about NTD $15,000 a month, making our monthly operating cost without providing our team any labor compensation is NTD $55,000 a month. All revenue from event entry, drinks, and donations first and foremost go to covering operating costs. We break even on most months and use any net revenue to provide nominal (well below minimum hourly wage) labor compensation for our volunteer team.
If I wanted to rent the DAYBREAK space or collaborate for an in-person event, how do I start that process?
